Spinning my Wedding Ring?
How come when I spin my wedding ring like you would a quarter it will spin for about 10 times longer than a quarter? It is a basic gold domed wedding band like these http://www.goldspeed.com/wedding-bands-rings-traditional-domed-14k-white-gold-shiny-classic-fit.html Is it due to the fact that the ring is hollow in the middle cutting down the resistance? I was just wondering.
Two basic reasons both related to the shape.
A quarter has I=m*R^2/2
while the ring is closely approximated by M*R^2
Assuming you spin the ring and the quarter at the same angular speed, you give the ring more KE,
KE=.5*I*w^2
The ring has twice as much KE per gram.
Also, the friction at the base is probably less for the ring since it doesn't have those little ridges and the friction against air is less, since it is hollow. Therefore, you will get more revolutions from the ring than the quarter since the ring does less work per rev.
Couple that to the higher KE and you have a longer spin.
