I have heard not to use a storage block and not to store them in a kitchen drawer. Any ideas?

Glue or duct tape some good magnets (hardware and craft stores have good strong ones) to a strip of wood.
Attach the strip of wood UNDER one of your upper cabinets, inside a cabinet door or (since I have no children) on the front of the ol' fridge!
Cleaned and dried (don't dishwash good blades, ruins the handles and dulls them), and stuck to your magnets, they can air dry thoroughly.
The tape will prevent scratching, the blades never get banged around, and there is a positive joy in being able to grab the "perfect" knife for the job you are doing!
There! You've freed up a safety hazard drawer, organized your cutlery, and are more efficient!
