Surgical Tattoo Removal
Much like liposuction, Botox, face-lifts and other seemingly simple cosmetic surgery procedures; surgery seems like the sure-fire and definitive means of being rid of an unwanted tattoo once and for all. However, unless you don’t mind looking like you’ve been carved up and roughly stitched back together; surgery is a serious business and requires the highly trained and refined skills of a qualified medical practitioner.
Sometimes unavoidable, especially where large areas of skin are involved, surgical excision is a highly invasive means of tattoo removal and is generally shunned these days in favor of laser technology.
The advantage offered by lasers is that the ink itself can be targeted. The skin need not be damaged and there is no risk of scarring, as the process simply attacks the pigment molecules and breaks them into little tiny pieces so that the body may dispose of them naturally. It is common for pigment to crust on the surface of the tattoo over the period of the treatments, which can go on for many weeks. Laser therapy in cleaner and more accurate, but takes longer and is not a cheap option. Requiring a minimum of 8-10 sessions to get the desired results, the process must incorporate extended rest periods to let the skin heal and prevent scar tissue from forming.
As much as it isn’t an ‘easy’ solution, surgical tattoo removal is also nothing to be frightened of. It is a relatively simple cosmetic procedure and, so long as you can accept that all surgery carries an element of risk and a period of painful recuperation; surgery does offer the right solution for some people.
Surgical tattoo removal should only be performed by medically qualified specialists and it is advisable to seek referrals from friends, the Internet (a goldmine of information) and even your regular doctor in order to find someone who has a reputation for doing great work. If you are willing to spend the cash and suffer the pain to remove your tattoo, it is worth doing your research to ensure a perfect result.
