Start Writing - A History Of A Ball Pen by Maria Kruk
No one can deny that a ball pen is an irreplaceable object in a life of all people, especially those ones, who constantly deal with writing, filling forms and documents. Of course, keyboards nowadays slowly, but crucially, substitute pens, but still in case of a hurry these things cannot be undervalued. To entertain those ones, who have not ever thought about this invention, here is information about patents, which promoted the distribution of this invention among humans.
The first steps towards ball pen movement were made at the end of 19th century, when John J. Loud has obtained a patent for it on October 30. Until that time, usage of feathers was the dominating way to write something. However, there were some pens, which were usually dipped into an ink bottle. This was a root for Loud's invention of "fountain pens", which maintained a certain internal reservoir with ink; so, the bottle of ink has lost its necessity. Although, it was just in theory, as in practice John Loud made only a few such pens and his patent expired soon.
As "the father of the ball pen" László József BÃró is announced, who received related patent in 1938. He was a Hungarian journalist, who resided in Argentina at the time. The invention process started from Biro's observation that typographic ink dries more quickly and does not dapple as common ink does. He tried to use typographic ink in feather refilling pen (used at those days widely), but the experiment did not go well as far as it was hard to write with such thick liquid. That is the moment, when Biro's brother, professor in chemistry, stands up on a scene, - instead of a feather, they used a hollow tube filled with ink. On the tip of the tube there was a little ball implemented, which helped to write with an ink on a paper surface. In contrast, nowadays lots of patents are related to the pen's ink: ink composition for water-based pen, ink for oil-base pen, ink follow-up materials, etc.
Argentinian company "Eversharp" has bought this patent on a price of 1 million dollars and started the production of ball pens immediately. Notwithstanding, with astonishing impudence this patent was stolen by Americans in 1943. Particularly, laws of that time claimed that a patent was legal only on the territory of the country it was issued in. As far as, Laszlo Biro patented a ball pen in Argentina and Hungary, representatives of other countries had a possibility to announce of ball pen invention in their Motherland (of course, if getting acquainted with original one). That is the case with Milton Reynolds, who had stolen the Eversharp's idea of ball pen, and patented it in the USA on June 10 1943 (this date is considered to be a birthday of a ball pen). That is the story how simple bagman turned to a prominent patent-holder in the United States.
