Cannavaro: El Mejor Jugador De Europa
El capitán italiano Fabio Cannavaro recibió el Premio del Balón de Oro. Ningún defensa había ganado este reconocimiento en los últimos 10 años y el italiano es el tercer defensa en lograr esto en los últimos treinta años.
El Premio del Balón de Oro se entrega al mejor jugador de fútbol europeo desde 1956. Fue creado por la revista francesa de fútbol "France Football". Este premio es también conocido como el Futbolista Europeo del Año. Es entregado todos los años al jugador que se considera que se desempeñó de la mejor manera durante el año anterior.
El requisito para ganar este premio es que el jugador tiene que haber estado jugando para algún club dentro de la jurisdicción de la UEFA. Además, el jugador tiene que ser de nacionalidad europea para ser elegible. Un grupo de periodistas de fútbol europeos es el responsable de votar por el mejor jugador.
Sólo tres jugadores han ganado este premio tres veces: Johan Cruijff y Marco van Basten de Holanda y Michel Platini de Francia.
Este año el ganador fue Cannavaro quien jugaba con el Juventus de Italia durante la pasada temporada y les ayudó a ganar la Copa Mundial pero actualmente juega con el Real Madrid.
Gianluigi Buffon, el portero italiano finalizó en segundo lugar con 124 puntos y Thierry Henry en tercer lugar con 121. Ronaldinho, quien ganó el premio en el 2005 quedó en cuarto lugar con 73 puntos y Zinédine Zidane en quinto con 71. Había cincuenta jugadores nominados.
