PAN Re-Opens, Pays FIRS Tax
Slug: PAN Re-Opens, Pays FIRS Tax
By: Victor Ulasi, Nigeria
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) which had sealed off the only surviving auto assembly plant in Nigeria, Peugeot Automobile Nigeria(PAN) last Thursday for failure to pay tax, has re opened the company on Saturday after collecting an undisclosed amount of money as tax from the auto assembly plant.
“They have paid very every substantial amount and also they have told us their reason why they have not been able to pay and the management of the Federal Inland Revenue were convinced that yes, the reason given to us are very, very reasonable."
"So they have paid very substantial amount of money and as such, we have been directed by the management to come and un seal the company,” CSP Adamu Abdullahi Yanliman, Head of Enforcement and Investigation unit of FIRS has said.
However, the Deputy Managing Director of the company, Shehu Sani Dauda said the closure of the company was due to breakdown of communication but reconciliation was been made and the company would remain open.
“It was back duty as a result of audit done in 2007 before we came in, which we did agreed to pay.We know of N659 million and they said N1.2 billion, negotiation was taking place and they said they served us some document telling us of their intention, but we have never received that,” he said.
He insisted that they were a responsible company and would remain in business because they were responsible tax payers who had never defaulted.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after opening the gate of PAN for business, the FIRS official, CSP Adamu Abdullahi Yanliman, said the amount paid by PAN remained undisclosed because they were trying to put everything in order before they release it.
According to him, “we have already negotiated with them, we have been negotiating, exchanging letters, so they were recalcitrant and we decided to come and follow the law. Then later on when they see us here, they now become serious."
"So they came and met bus yesterday in Abuja and actually what they told us, we were all convinced and what they gave us is at least something reasonable that would now make us to come and un seal.”
Commenting on the disputed figures of N1.291billion and N659 million, he explained that the FIRS added penalty, interest and fine in their computation which brought the difference ,while PAN did not add anything to the actual tax.
He said the exercise was a usual one and FIRS had gone to Conoil and Continental oil recently, warning that they were going to seal off any company nationwide that failed to pay tax .
Similarly, Col. Olu Majoyegbe(rtd) of the FIRS said the policy for taxation in Nigeria was self assessment and voluntary compliance as a tax payer was supposed to do the assessment and said his liability.
“So when you do that, if Inland Revenue has any doubt, they would now do an audit but most of the time they just declare this is what we have so if the thing accumulated, its not our fault. When they came, they made the kind of presentation that caused management to order an immediate reopening.”
“ It has never happened before and we are surprised that we are here, but we are under instruction, they are satisfied with the amount of money offered and probably this is the only automobile plant in Nigeria,” he added.

how long do you cook a cake in a 8x4 round pan?
the pan came with instructions but i lost them, its a witson if that helps.
It depends how full you fill your pan. I would start with about 20 min., then lay your hand gently (palm down and layed flat) on the top of the cake to see if it is firm all over. If it feels a little "loose" in the middle, give it a few minutes more. You could do the toothpick test too but I use the hand test at work for all of our carrot cakes. Our oven fluctuates so its always a little different length of time.
