Tactical Knifes Are Not Just For Combat Anymore
A tactical, or combat, knife is a knife that is specifically designed for use by the military, especially those involved in close combat. However, with the end of trench warfare, there is typically not much close combat taking place anymore, and thus, tactical knifes have become more of a utility type of tool.
These knives are now most often used to clear foliage, open crates with ammunition and other supplies, or to chop branches to use as cover. There are many different knives available today, depending on the intended use. Today you can find tactical knifes in many different shapes. You can also find a variety of sizes, although the military tends to standardize the particular types of knives that they issue to their soldiers. Indeed, many countries issue their own style of knives to their soldiers. Military knives have become collectors' items, especially amongst those who are big military history buffs.
The main requirements for a good tactical knife are that it be able to be used as either an everyday tool as well as a survival weapon when needed. Tactical knifes can have a folding blade or a fixed blade, but the blades are always extremely sharp. It is important that a tactical knife be readily accessible, easy to open and easy to use quickly while one-handed. Many of these knives have been modified to suit the needs of farmers as well as outdoorsmen, who use them for a great number of different purposes.
Another option when it comes to tactical knifes that should be considered is the type of blade. Do you want a plain or Serrated Edge? The right choice depends upon the intended use. A plain edged blade is best for push cuts, clean cuts, when accuracy is needed, and for the most control in the job you are performing. A serrated edge, on the other hand, works best when making slicing cuts.
There are also a variety of blade shapes with tactical knifes. Three of the most popular blade shapes are the drop point, clip and modified clip. Detail work is best when using the sharp point of a clip blade, but it is not too strong. A modified clip blade is a good choice in high-tech knives and comes in many different shapes. The drop point is best for heavier jobs as it has a thick point. However, this type of blade cannot penetrate objects very easily.
When purchasing a tactical knife, there are many things to consider in order to choose the right one. For most people, a knife with a blade that folds down is the best, safest and most practical option. These tactical knifes can be easily carried around in one's pocket without fear of injuring oneself or others by accident. A folding knife should always come with a good built in locking mechanism to ensure that it doesn't open up and injure someone should it fall out of one's pocket. A knife that does not fold should be carried in a sheath. Although more difficult to transport, these knives are perfect for hunting or camping and will be sure to provide good protection if you are in woodsy areas.
Whichever type of knife you purchase, the blade and handle should always be of a good quality. Tactical knifes should have a steel blade with a durable grip, preferably made of a synthetic material. And most important of all, always exercise absolute safety when carrying and using your tactical knife.

What kitchen knives should every kitchen have?
I am in the process of gradually upgrading my existing kitchen knives one at a time and want to know what kitchen knives would be best to add to my collection. I have already have a quality 10" chef's knife, a 3" Paring Knife, a Serrated Bread knife and a 6" utility/Slicing Knife that I reach for all the time. Any others I should add? What about the Asian Santoku knives? Do I need one? I have a Sharpening Steel. I have about 3 more slots in my knife block. I'm not sure I'd use a Boning Knife much. I would like to know what other knives good cooks find useful.
I have a Global 10" chef's knife (G-16), their 3 or 4" paring knife (GS-38) and recently was given their 7" G-5 Vegetable Knife which is very similar in design to the Santoku knives by Global. The G-5 is the darned most useful knife I own. it works amazingly well for thinly slicing tomatoes or even cheese. I hardly ever use the paring knife and, of course, the chef's knife is a staple. Truth be told, I could get by with just the chef's knife but the Santoku form-factor just seems to work so well. I am now interested in a shorter broad Santoku-style knife such as the Global GL-G4.
Oh, and what krennao wrote: shears. They are truly indispensible. I once carved a small turkey with a pair and the results were great.
