How do I solve for a variable when two expressions are set equal to each other?
I have two expressions.
f(t) = 50(2)^t
f(t) = 20(3)^t
My question says "set the two expressions equal and solve for t using tools and strategies of your choice. What does this solution mean?"
Does anyone have any idea how to solve for t? I know I'm supposed to use logarithms, but I'm just not sure how to apply it to this problem.

First, set them equal to each other:
50(2)^t = 20(3)^t
Now you want to get your variable, "t", on the same side. So divide both sides by 20, then by 2^t. So you end up with:
50/20 = (3^t)/(2^t)
Now, (3^t)/(2^t) = (3/2)^t = 1.5^t
50/20=2.5
So your new equation is 2.5=1.5^t
Now use "log".
log(2.5) = log(1.5^t) which is the same as
log(2.5) = t*log(1.5)
Now divide by log(1.5) to get "t" by itself.
so t = log(2.5) / log(1.5).
t = 0.9163/0.4055
t = 2.2599
