What wood should I use for my train set?
Its for a metal shed with a hornby train set
This is for my actual layout not scenery
I'm assuming you're talking about wood for the "Bench-work" for the train-set INSIDE your metal shed: You'll want GOOD plywood and you'll want to SEAL it if its in a shed to avoid warping because of humidity.
Building little BUILDINGS for your set CAN be done from balsa... BUT I really prefer using sheet polystyrene plastic because it also isn't subject to humidity. It's also stronger, easy to cut, and comes in patterns like clapboard, tin-roof, and brick.
I've not used Hornsby trains (being a yank)... BUT ONE suggestion... buy the Hornsby track book(s), and a book or two on Railway yards and track, a BIG bundle of graph paper and PLAN your layout before you start building !!
This can save you a BUNDLE: You will make most of your mistakes on PAPER which is much cheaper than buying more plywood. Errors I've made: Track too far to reach and put train back on the track, Turns with too tight a radius, Grades too high, S-switch errors, etc.
