Do I cook with the spoon notch open on my crock pot?

I bought a Rival 6 qt crock pot SCVP609 model. The stoneware has an open slot for a spoon to rest in. When I put the lid on to cook, that hole is still open just under the lid. It's a rather large hole, won't that slot let the steam/heat escape that's needed for cooking? Is there some sort of plug or cover that I missed?
Maybe I could leave the spoon in when I cook. It's some sort of plastic compound though -- it might melt.

It would seem strange to have the spoon there while you cook.

I've tried looking up your model and it seems that this crock pot tends to get very hot so perhaps the slot should not be covered?
