How To Care For Your Cutlery Set

If you have a beautiful set of cutlery you will want to make sure that you are taking care of it properly. Depending on the materials that the pieces are made out of, and what their shape is will influence how they must be cared for.

Common materials used in the manufacture of modern cutlery include Stainless Steel and Sterling Silver. There are others but these are two of the most common. They are popular because they can be shaped into different patterns and are easy to care for although each material does have its own particular needs.

Sterling silver will react with air and become dark and dull. This oxidized layer on the surface of the metal is called tarnish. Many of us can remember being forced to polish the silver using chemical goop and a cloth in time to get ready for Sunday dinner. There is good news. The more it is used, the less it will tarnish. It should also be stored in a case or drawer with a special lining. Stainless steel will not tarnish but you need to make sure that it is thoroughly dry to prevent it from forming water spots.

The way you care for a knife depends mainly on whether it has a serrated or a smooth blade. Serrated blades have a scalloped edge and are very sharp. However, should they become dull they cannot be sharpened again. Steak Knives often have serrated edges as do some bread knives. You want to make sure you are not cutting metal or other very hard materials as this can destroy a serrated blade.

A knife with a non serrated blade can be sharpened repeatedly. You need to make sure that you keep your knives sharp and in good order. This is because you will cut yourself worse with a dull knife. You will need to use more force and if the knife slips and cuts you it can be very bad. You can use a dremel tool or have your knives professionally sharpened. You will need a steel to run the sharpened blade along to bring it back into alignment.

Forks are fairly easy to care for. When washing, make sure that you are getting all the food debris from the insides of the tines. This can be easier with a two tined Carving Fork but is important with all forks.

Before you put the fork away, take a quick look at the tines and make sure that they are not bent or twisted. This can be a problem with some forks that are made out of softer metals such as pewter. If there are any problems gently try and bend them back into position. Also check the angle of the fork to the handle as this is also where some bending can occur.

Spoons may bend at the point where the bowl meets the stem. Take a look and make sure that this has not happened. If it has, gently and slowly bend the spoon back into shape. If your spoon has a handle that is not attached to the tang you need to make sure that you do not snap the top of the spoon off the handle. All cutlery pieces should be thoroughly dry before it is put in the drawer.

Caring for your cutlery pieces may take a little time but it can make the pieces last longer and work better. Because good, high-quality cutlery sets can be expensive, taking the time can save you money in the long run.

OK--major dilema--linensnthings.com has Henckel steak knives, stainless steel, set of 4 for $89.99
Bedbathandbeyond.com has several more choices, the Henckel Twin select 4 piece in stainless steel for $239.99
They look very similar, not sure of the difference. Wondering if the more spendy ones are actually better?

You get what you pay for. If you really feel that you need steak knives that cost that much, you won't be disappointed by the more expensive ones, but if you bought the less expensive ones, you'd probably be satisfied with them.

The difference is probably the tang (the metal part that goes into the handle) either going all the way to the end of the handle or just part way through.

The blades should probably be comparable, though.

Actually, I just looked on line and found some for $239. They don't have a separate handle -- the handle is sculpted from the same stainless steel. Nice, if you like a steel handled knife, and the handle will never crack or break. The others are around $59-89 and have a typical Black Handle. The blade quality seems to be the same...

Many people are under the impression that they have to go to a
restaurant to eat a high quality, tender and juicy steak dinner. You
may be glad to hear that you can cook the perfect steak with
relatively little effort, right in the comfort of your own home.
Restaurant chefs have been trained to know a few specific tricks of
the trade, which allow them to consistently prepare steaks that taste
great. One of the best ways to cook a steak is by doing it over a
stainless steel grill. Meat that is prepared on a stainless steel
grill is often better than meat prepared in a kitchen. In this
particular situation, it is true that you get what you pay for. If you
are going to cook a steak on your stainless steel grill, then you
should be aware that one of the biggest influences on a good steak is
more reliant on the quality of the steak than on your cooking
expertise. Some of the best cuts of steak to look for are the Filet
Mignon, New York Strip Steak, T-bone, or Rib eye. If you are looking
for a good cut of meat, you may go by the rating of the meat; on the
steak rating system, prime is the highest quality. Also look at the
marbling of the meat; generally a cut that has more marbling is less
tender but more flavorful. When you are planning to cook your steak on
a stainless steel grill, choosing a high quality cut can often be more
expensive, but will also be a step towards grilling the perfect steak.
The preparation and seasoning of the steak is also important before
you put steaks on the stainless steel grill. If you have more time or
a cheaper cut of meat, then you may want to marinate the meat. A good
marinade can infuse the steak with flavor and also increase its
tenderness. Whether or not you marinate the steak, rub it down with a
good rub before cooking it on a stainless steel grill. The rub can be
as simple as salt, black pepper, garlic, and steak seasoning.
Surprisingly, complex and expensive seasonings are not necessary to
make the perfect steak. Prepare the stainless steel grill for cooking.
A stainless steel grill should be heated before the steak is
introduced in order to ensure that it cooks evenly and at the correct
rate. You may also need to clean the stainless steel grill using a
scraper or wire brush before beginning to cook the meat. Steaks cook
best over a medium low flame. If you have a stainless grill that
offers detailed control knobs, you will have more control over cooking
