Oster's tiered food steamer is equipped with instant steam so you can start cooking immediately. It has a combined, 6-qt. capacity (3.8-qt. and 2.3-qt. bowls) and comes with fully collapsible steaming trays for easy cleaning. The large bowl includes eight egg holders for making soft or hard cooked eggs. It also has an external water fill system with a see-through reservoir: monitor the water level and you'll never run out of steam. The LCD display has a 95-minute timer. I reviewed many steamers before deciding on this one and am very pleased with my decision. This is a great steamer. It makes perfect hard-boiled eggs (one thing I have always had trouble doing), steams vegetables (both fresh and frozen) perfectly and is even great for hot dogs. This appliance sits on my counter year-round which is not my style, as I like to leave my counters uncluttered. It gets used so much that I couldn't see the need to put it away. This is a great buy!

We purchased the Oster 5712 steamer 4 years ago. It features a number of nice improvements over previous generations of food steamers. It has a basin system to catch drips from the food and a steaming chamber that rapidly gets the steam going. The electronic controls are pleasant and practical. If you have other things to prepare, you can have the rice (for example) loaded into the steamer hours in advance and have the steamer start on its own while you are busy with other things.
We like this product very much. Alas, the plastic bowls have started to wear out, and in particular, the rice bowl now has a crack through which liquids leak through. Worse still, the crack is under the stream heating element where the basin system cannot catch the drippings, so the food juices are getting into the water reservoir and will damage the heating element eventually.
We have looked for replacement bowls to no avail. They are made of recyclable plastics. Yet, unless you can obtain replacement bowls, you have no choice but to buy a whole new unit even if the heating element is working just fine and isn't otherwise recyclable.
We like the unit so much, we'll go ahead and buy a new one. However, it is disappointing to see how products for a "sustainable lifestyle" has yet to extend to the good old fashioned tradition of having replacement parts for appliances.

The lid cracked in the dishwasher but I love the set it and forget it for cooking frozen lotus wrapped rice dim sum and steaming single potatoes. The heating element seems to have corroded so steaming uncovered food is a concern including potatoes.

i have recently acquired an old rice cooker/food steamer,made of glass,however,it did not have a manual.?
i was wondering about the measurement of water to put when i steam food or cook rice.there were specifications on the steamer,like asparagus spears-fill in:low or something like that.i don't see a line on the glass that indicate low mid or high.i am wondering if anyone could help me.thanks
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup long grain rice
Just switch ON and it will do ---
1. In a large saucepan, bring the water to boil. Add salt and rice; cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 20 minutes, without lifting cover.

2. Remove from heat, gently fluff rice with fork and let sit for a few minutes with the cover off. Fluff again and serve.
Note: The formula for long grain rice is normally 2 parts water, 1 part rice. However, when using Jasmine rice, it is best to use less water, about 2 tablespoons less water per cup used.

Arroz con Coco: Coconut Rice
2 cups long-grain white rice
2 cups water
1 can light coconut milk
1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup toasted coconut flakes
Place the rice, 2 cups of water, the coconut milk, sugar and the salt- in the cooke--( in a medium saucepan and stir to combine. Bring the rice to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the water has evaporated to just below the level of the rice and little holes begin to form on the surface, stirring occasionally so that the rice doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan and burn. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting, cover the saucepan and continue to cook until the rice is tender, 20 to 25 minutes.)
THEN:
Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in the raisins. Cover the saucepan and let it sit off of the heat until the raisins are plump and warm, 10 minutes. Sprinkle the rice with the toasted coconut and serve

14 tips on how to save energy with your cooker by Alex Duthie
1. Use a minute minder when cooking; using one means that you can turn your mind to other things and not fret about burning both your dinner and a hole in your pocket.
2. One step further would be to get an oven with a programmable timer. These enable users to set specific times for the oven to turn off and on, again helping prevent your dinner from being burnt and energy being wasted.
3. Another rather simple piece of advice to follow is to only open your oven door when essential. Leaving the door open for 5 seconds can mean you lose about 10°C (25°F).
4. Continuing on from that last point, make sure that your oven door is clean and that you can see through it, then you will only have to open it when you take out your food.
5. Do not pre-heat your oven unless the recipe calls for it, you will have wasted all the energy that it takes to get up to the heat wanted.
6. Double ovens are another easy way to reduce your cooking costs. Having two different sized cavities enables you to cut down your energy usage depending on what you are cooking.
7. The different ways that your oven is cleaned also adds to your energy bill. Pyrolytic cleaning (a setting on the cooker that heats the oven up to 500°C to kill any germs) is less time consuming, but it uses between 2.4 - 6 kWh per cycle, whereas on average, an A energy efficiency rated oven uses 0.9 kWh per use.
8. Instead, a great alternative is to get a cooker which uses catalytic oven liners (where the oven absorbs grease and breaks it down). These can last for the lifetime of the oven, and use the heat from normal usage to clean (2).
9. Turning off your oven and hobs a few minutes earlier than you normally would, can also save you money. As long as the oven door stays closed and pan lids stay on, enough heat is kept in to finish off the cooking.
10. To add to that last point, always make sure to keep the lid on any pans that you are cooking with. Doing so can increase cooking times by up to 1/3.
11. Use a kettle to boil any water, and then transfer it to the pan, this is faster and more energy efficient than heating it up on the hob.
12. When cooking on a hob, use the smallest amount of water necessary, this will speed up the cooking process.
13. Alternatively, if you are cooking vegetables using a hob, get a steamer with a tier system. You can then use these different tiers to cook multiple pans worth of food on one hob.
14. Always use the right hob for the right pan, if the hob is too big energy will be wasted, if the pan is too big it will take longer to cook.
