Why does new silicone sealant not stick to old?
I'm resealing my bath and have had a terrible time getting the old sealant off I've been told you cant put new silicone over old as it wont stick.
Why?? I only need to do a little bit just wondered why they dont make it so you can reseal in gaps even when dry?
It does stick to the old, but not well. To get the old caulk out, use a sharp Utility Knife. Cut along the top, and cut along the bottom, then use a putty knife to dig it out. If there is any left, use the blade to scrape it. An old timer showed me a trick to applying the new. Fill the tub 3/4 of the way, then apply your caulk. Let it sit for about 3 hours, then drain the tub. You will have an impenetrable seal. Hope this helps.
