I've asked this question about a million times, and the only answer anyone has given me is "so they stack better", but if that were the case, why don't all tins of food have the same bases?
If you don't now what I'm talking about, pop off to the cupboard (or the shop if you're too posh to have beans in your house) and you'll see that baked bean tins have a moulded, more round base than other tins.
Why? Any ideas?
If I had to guess I would say that it is so that they can be warmed up in the can... over a campfire or something. Maybe it is a better base for that kind of thing.
