Protect Yourself Against Hospital Infections
A recent study shows that there's a rise in drug-resistant strains of Acinetobacter, a dangerous bacteria found widely in U.S. hospitals. Every year about two million people in the U.S. contract nosocomial infections, also known as "hospital infections" — infections contracted while getting medical care in a hospital or other health facility.
These virulent bugs often cause serious illness, or even death. To help protect the public, Core Content Media has an article 10 Ways to Protect Yourself from Hospital Infections.
Who Is Most at Risk for Acinetobacter?
Patients in hospital intensive care units and soldiers returning from Iraq are most at risk for getting. This hospital infection can lead to severe pneuomonia or bloodstream infections. In some cases, not even strong drugs can stop the bacteria.
For the study, which was published in the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, researchers from the Extending the Cure project analyzed data from 300 American hospitals to assess the resistance to imipenem, a last-line of defence antibiotic. The results showed that between 1999 and 2006, there was a 300 percent increase in the amount of Acinetobacter cases that were resistant to imipenem.
According to Ramanan Laxminarayan, the principal investigator of Extending the Cure, the findings are particularly troubling because they signal that the bacteria is growing resistant to nearly every drug available.
To fight this surging problem of drug-resistant bacteria and hospital infection, the researchers advise more rigorous infection control across the country. They also recommend that drug companies provide incentives to develop novel antibiotics to destroy resistant strains of bacteria.
5 Ways to Protect Yourself from Hospital Infection from Core Content Media
1. Eat super-healthy meals before going into hospital, such as lots of green vegetables, fruits, and superfoods such as spirulina and probiotics.
2. Ask hospital staff to disinfect their hands before touching you. Keep an alcohol-based sanitizer in your room to make it easy for them.
3. Ask for hospital tubes to be removed shortly after surgery, or avoid having them when it's possible.
4. Stay warm to increase your immune cells' ability to fight hospital infection.
5. Leave hospital as soon as you can to go home.

How can I paint fondant using the color gel?
I'm making my friends little sister's Birthday Cake in a few months and I'm using the bug pan that I have. The Cake Pan with different bugs (ladybugs, dragonflies, bees) and I was going to cover then with fondant and wanted to paint them, like water color. I have the Wilton food color, and another food color that I believe isn't as thick as the Wilton, but isn't like the McCormick food color either. Would it work to just add water to that and paint it on with a regular paint brush or is there another method I should use??
What works the best is to use gel colors and thin them with vodka or clear vanilla extract. If you use them without thinning, they will take forever to dry. If you thin with water, it's more likely to run and also to soften your fondant. I usually paint with Wilton colors. I have used the Americolors sometimes too, but some of theirs darken a lot while drying, so you have to be careful that red roses don't turn into black roses and things like that.
About the paint brush, use one that has never been used for paint. Gently pull on the bristles before using it, so that any loose bristles will come off in your hand, not on the cake (where they will look like hairs). To add some sparkle to your cake, get a vial of white luster dust (Wilton makes one) and sprinkle a bit into your paint mixtures. That would look especially good on dragonflies and on the wings of the other bugs.
