problem with black food color concentrate?
I bought a bottle of wilton food color concentrate in black. I just tried making royal icing...1st batch was chocolate w/ a touch of black added in. It turned this disgusting color so I tossed it.
Tried again, this time adding the concentrate to white royal icing. It turned moss green. Is this normal for black color concentrate or is it a mislabeled bottle? Both the top and side labels read 'black'. I don't want to add too much as I don't want to affect the taste, but I need a very dark royal icing for my cookies.

The black food paste probably dyes a truer color on buttercream rather than royal icing, which is thinner and has less fat in it. Try using buttercream to dye black, and outline w/ it. Also, you may need to use a whole lot more paste food color to achieve true black.
